The Everything Guide to Writing a Book Proposal
surprised me. After
all, I've written an ebook on book proposals and have had some
success with them; truth be told, I didn't expect to learn much,
if anything. I was wrong!
How-to for a Book Writing Career
This book, which is titled so you'd think it was only about
writing book proposals is much more than that. It's actually a
guidebook for a career writing books.
Although Schneider and Doyen keep their information pointed at
a book proposal that sells, there are chapters on everything from
the equipment freelance writers need to the taxes freelance
writers pay.
Particularly helpful for me is Chapter 5, Researching the
Market. It's got some decent stats on the writing game like the
typical reader and what percentage of a given potential audience
is likely to buy the book.
Fiction as Well as Non-Fiction
Another delightful surprise is multiple chapters on writing
fiction, including how to prepare a fiction proposal. As a
non-fiction writer with a secret desire to write detective novels
I was surprised by much of the information here.
The Publishing Industry
There's also lots of solid information on the publishing
industry itself. The book also covers agents and what to expect,
self-publishing and much much more.
This is a book, which by the way is easy to read, and easy to
find information in, I'm glad I now have on my writer's reference
shelf.
